Kingstree, South Carolina to Galveston, Texas Transportation Request Memorial

The unveiling program will include Kingstree Town and South Carolina State Elected Officials,
Williamsburgh County Historical Society Representatives, Clergy and Living Memorial Descendants

On January 15, 1867, a transportation request was made to 
Maj. Gen. Oliver Otis Howard, Commissioner of The Freedmen’s Bureau, to transport 435 Freed men, women and children from Kingstree in Williamsburg County, South Carolina to Charleston, South Carolina then on to Galveston, Texas. The journey was made by ship and these formerly enslaved people were ultimately transported to Falls County, Texas 
to work under Freedmen’s Bureau Labor Contracts.
